Tourism officials from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are discussing a draft plan on tourism development in the triangle area covering 13 provinces of the three countries.

The talks are taking place in southern Laos’ Champasak province, some 484 kilometers south of Laos’ capital Vientiane, during a working meeting of tourism officials of the three countries.

According to a report by the tourism development department of Laos’ ministry of information, culture and tourism, the aim is to develop the triangle area into a sustainable tourism destination and to improve the living conditions of people in that area, a move that could put further pressure on Thailand’s tourism sector.

After the meeting, the representatives of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam will consult with their associates to refine the draft development plan and submit it to local and central level authorities for approval, which could take place in early 2020, according to Phonemaly Inthaphome, deputy director general of the tourism development department of the ministry.

In a first step, the plan is to highlight important tourist attractions in Champasak province and its of capital Pakse. These landmark sites will be linked to places of importance in Cambodia and Vietnam to create tourist packages and a single destination. Attractions in the provinces of Salavan, Xekong and Attapeu will also be defined and linked to landmarks in the respective Cambodian and Vietnamese provinces.
