Tencent to expand cloud-based gaming via partnership in SE Asia, S Korea

Aug 05, 2019 (China Knowledge) - Tencent Holdings (0700) is seeking for partnership in South Korea and Southeast Asia, to extend its cloud-based gaming business overseas, and it will be a primary focus for the company, said its product manager, Li Guolong.

Cloud-based games allow users to stream games directly from the cloud to their mobile devices, computers and consoles, instead of the cumbersome and time-consuming download process. This also helps to reduce the need for data storage so to provide a better gaming experience.

Tencent looks to further success in Southeast Asia market, as the customers there are reportedly less likely to use gaming consoles such as Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox, creating a potential promising market for cloud-based games.

Having entered Japan’s cloud service market, Tencent Cloud announces that it would focus on servicing gaming companies. According to its annual report in 2018, the cloud business contributed RMB 9.1 billion to Tencent’s total revenue, or up to 3%. The company expects a five-fold increase in international revenue of its cloud business this year.

“We want to support the whole ecosystem, and the small and medium game companies could improve customer acquisition when they are no longer impeded by the need to download games,” said Yang Yu, head of Tencent Cloud gaming solutions.
