Key players in the freight and logistics sector from the Mekong countries, as well as development practitioners and experts, policymakers, academics and businesses and the civil sector are set to gather next month in Khon Kaen, Thailand for the Joint Mekong Forum and GMS Logistics Forum 2019. Organized by the Mekong Institute (MI) and the Federation of Thai Industries – Khon Kaen and co-hosted by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), the Mekong Forum – GMS Logistics Forum 2019 is set to take place on July 24-25, 2019 at the Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid Hotel, Khon Kaen, Thailand.

With the theme, Bridging Borders: GMS Connectivity for Inclusiveness and Sustainability, the Forum aims to encourage timely discussions on the role of the logistics sector in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) in boosting regional connectivity and fostering increased sustainability and inclusiveness among communities.

According to MI Executive Director Dr. Watcharas Leelawath, the event also supports one of Thailand’s objectives as Chair of the ASEAN this year – promoting ‘seamless logistics’ in the region through the ‘connecting of connectivities.’

“Connectivity and the logistics sector are very important in the GMS these days to drive forward regional growth and progress. This Forum is a good opportunity for us in the region to gain a better awareness of the logistics sector’s role in this objective as well as network with many relevant stakeholders in the GMS and beyond,” he adds.

Mekong Institute, an intergovernmental organization working in human resource capacity building development, has been organizing the Mekong Forum since 2011, a landmark event designed to offer a platform for knowledge sharing and exchange among regional experts on pressing development issues in the GMS. This year, MI is co-hosting the joint logistics forum with TCEB, the latter having launched the 1stGMS Logistics Forum in 2018.

This year’s joint forum will feature discussions on the infrastructural frameworks needed by the logistics sector to bolster GMS cross-border trade, capacity building needs and digital technologies that can help build an agile and robust regional logistics network.

Expected to draw some 200 participants from both the private and public sectors across the GMS, a Business Matching Program for selected logistics service providers and enterprises is also scheduled on July 25, which promises to offer a platform for business networking and linkaging among logistics companies from Cambodia, P.R. China, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam.

Registration for the Mekong Forum-GMS Logistics Forum 2019 is until July 10, 2019. Visit www.mekongforum.com for registration details and more information on the event.
