The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has developed a way to 3D print bionic skin as an alternative to cosmetic testing on animals.

The bionic epidermal tissue is named EPiTRI. It is designed for in-vitro use during cosmetic safety assessments, such as epidermis corrosion and irritation tests.

The new 3D printing technology is expected to aid cosmetic manufacturers in the development of new materials and formula, while complying with international regulations that have been in place since 2013, when the use of animals for cosmetic testing was banned in the EU.
